Ann Martin (63) is a PRO and fund-raiser for the Brakpan SPCA. She lives in Huntingdon, in Brakpan North, and has four children and six grandchildren.
• For how long have you been involved with the Brakpan SPCA?
I’ve been with the SPCA from the days when we operated from a caravan along Heidelberg Road. It’s been 37 years in various capacities, but more so over the last four years.
• How did you become involved?
I’ve just always had a passion for animals and wanted to raise awareness about the SPCA.
• What does your job entail?
I was originally a kennel manager, but suffered a back injury and was no longer able to do the more physical aspects of the job, so I moved over to PRO and fund-raising.
The main function is fund-raising, but I also need to raise awareness about the SPCA in the community.
People have certain perceptions about the SPCA and I need to change that, so I started getting involved with the community and organising fun walks.
It’s also my mission this year to sterilise 1 000 animals and, after months and months of work, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said they would partner with us.
• Describe a typical day at the office:
I’m never in the office.
I’m out meeting with people and sponsors, and discussing ideas with people who can help.
It’s very important to get the local community and local business community on board with the SPCA, because we are not funded by government.
• What is the best part of your job?
I love the interaction with the animals. Touching, hugging and kissing them.
• What is the worst part of your job?
The cruelty.
• What is your favourite animal?
A rescued one.
• If you were to survive on an island for three weeks, which three items would you pack and why?
A toothbrush, my three dogs and a sleeping bag.
That’s all I’d need.
• Describe the contents of your handbag:
A diary, a book, headache tablets, tick and flea treatment, a torch, nail clippers, an asthma pump and business cards.
