NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR MAJOR HAZARD INSTALLATION AT AECI MINING : STANDERTON STREET, MODDERFONTEIN, GAUTENG Project proposal: Notice is hereby given in terms of Sub- regulation 3(2) of the Revised Major Hazards Installation Regulations (GNR.692 of 30 July 2001) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993 as amended), of the intention of AECI Mining to renew their MHI license for the storage of more than 200t of Ammonia anhydrous. The classification is based on the presence and use of hazardous substances at the facility, which, due to their nature, quantities, and processing conditions, may pose significant risks to the health and safety of employees, the public, and the environment. Key details: Facility Name: AECI Mining: Modderfontein Location: AECI has an explosives and chemicals manufacturing facility at the Modderfontein site. Nature of activities: The facility receives raw materials such as anhydrous ammonia and other chemicals by road or rail. They are a bulk storage facilities on site with anhydrous ammonia being the largest storage facility. The factory produces and stores nitric acid, ammonium nitrate (in various concentrations both granulated and liquid) and ammonium nitrate based emulsions. The storage and usage of anhydrous ammonia, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and ammonium nitrate (in various forms) resulted in the AECI mining facility requesting ISHECON cc to conduct a Major Hazard Installation (MHI) risk assessment study. As required by law, a risk assessment has been conducted by ISHECONcc and is available for public review.
