SAPS meeting draws more attendees

The banking sector, municipality and the SPCA are now represented at the monthly meeting as well.

The Brakpan SAPS held its monthly stakeholders’ meeting at the State Mines Country Club in Sherwood Gardens on August 21.

This meeting saw more stakeholders attend, including a representative of the banking sector, Shiraz Kraft, from Standard Bank, and a Brakpan Customer Care Centre (CCC) for the CoE representative, Seja Manamela.

The crime overview for the last month doesn’t look good, with hijackings, particularly motorcycle hijackings, rising drastically, especially on Main Reef Road in Anzac and New Kleinfontein Road near Leachville.

Business robberies also rose, with most cases occurring on Fridays between midnight and 06:00 in Anzac, Brakpan Central, Van Eck and Vulcania. House robberies also rose sharply, with most cases reported in Brakpan Central, Leachville and Sherwood Gardens.

Shiraz Kraft from Standard Bank takes input from the stakeholders aimed at the banking sector.

Most of these robberies occurred in the evenings between 18:00 and midnight, with equal numbers on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Robbery without a weapon and house break-ins increased in Rand Collieries and Brakpan Central, with robberies also a problem in Leachville and break-ins in Dalview.

Theft of motor vehicles remains a serious concern, especially in Brakpan Central, Brenthurst, Dalpark and school events with no security.

However, there were several successes, with many arrests concerning motorcycle hijackings and house robberies.

During the meeting, when stakeholders asked and answered questions related to their sectors, Shiraz and Seja noted the queries the stakeholders had for them to follow up on and address at the next meeting.

AfriForum reminded the SAPS that there is still confusion on the correct process to follow in domestic violence or assault cases and that members need training on handling such cases.

It was proposed to invite RATA Social Services to the next meeting to engage stakeholders on the steps taken in the cases of domestic violence and abuse of children.

The SPCA told the stakeholders they are no longer allowed to sell poison kits and to ask the public to report dog poisonings to the SAPS and the SPCA so they can compile more accurate stats and prevent further crimes.
