Driver turns the tables on would-be hijackers.

Two would-be hijackers were arrested in Brakpan on January 25 after their intended victim put up a fight.

According to information received from police, the victim, an e-hailing driver, received a request for a ride at 13:24.

He picked up two passengers at an address along Hastings Avenue with the instruction to drive them to Wordsworth Street in Dalpark.

When they arrived at the destination, the front seat passenger told the driver it was the incorrect address. He told the driver he would direct him to the correct location.

They drove a little further and the driver asked the men to pay their fare.

The passenger in the back then threatened the driver with a gun. He told him not to make any noise and instructed him to hand over his belongings.

The driver handed over his bag and told the duo he didn’t have any money.

The front seat passenger then pointed a knife at the driver and told him to get out of the car.

The driver initially refused but a shot was fired and he climbed out of the car.

As the knifeman was attempting to start the car, the driver tried to stop him.

The man pointed the knife at him again and a scuffle for the weapon ensued.

The knife dropped to the ground and the driver picked it up. He then stabbed the man in the arm.

His accomplice fired another shot, which missed the driver, and he was able to snatch the car keys from the ignition and locked the pair inside the vehicle.

The driver ran to a nearby petrol station for help and returned shortly afterwards with a man who offered to assist.

They saw the two perpetrators running towards the N17 highway.

The driver then saw a police vehicle along Rangeview Road and rushed to the SAPS members to report the incident.

They accompanied the driver and saw the men jumping over the wall of a house in the area.

More police members were notified and two men were arrested shortly afterwards.

A cellphone and a bottle of perfume stolen from the driver were found in their possession.

A case of attempted hijacking was opened.
