Crime stats: Brakpan remains a truck hijacking hotspot

Property crimes are also on the increase in Brakpan according to the latest figures.

The second quarter crime statistics were released last week, reflecting crimes reported to SAPS from July to September this year.

Property-related crimes remain a concern in Brakpan with many offences in this category showing an increase.

Brakpan SAPS is also featured on the national top 30 list for truck hijackings and ranks 12th in this category. This is not the first time the local police station has appeared on this list.

The full stats for Brakpan are as follows and are compared to the same time period as the previous year.

Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder decreased from 11 cases the previous year to six.
• Sexual offences decreased from 18 to 17.
• Attempted murder decreased from eight to six.
• Assault GBH decreased from 33 to 29.
• Common assault increased from 50 to 75.
• Common robbery decreased from 26 to 14.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 137 to 116.

Contact crimes decreased from 283 to 263.
Sexual offences

• Rape increased from 10 cases the previous year to 12.
• Sexual assault decreased from eight to four.
• Attempted sexual offences increased from no cases to one.
• Contact sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.

Some subcategories of aggravated robbery
• Carjacking decreased from 28 cases the previous year to 24.
• Robbery at residential premises increased from 11 to 27.
• Robbery at non-residential premises decreased from 38 to 11.
• Trio crime decreased from 77 to 62.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicle decreased from one to none.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Truck hijacking increased from four to eight.

Contact-related crimes
• Arson increased from no cases the previous year to one.
• Malicious damage to property increased from 42 to 58.

• Burglary at non-residential premises increased from 39 cases the previous year to 40.
• Burglary at residential premises increased from 73 to 108.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle increased from 43 to 49.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle increased from 38 to 64.
• Stock theft decreased from two cases to none.

Property-related crime increased from 171 to 249.

Other serious crimes
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere increased from 196 cases the previous year to 220.
• Commercial crime increased from 67 to 92.
• Shoplifting decreased from 40 to 38.
Other serious crime increased from 330 to 356.
• 17 community reported serious crimes increased from 826 to 927.

Crimes detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased from six cases the previous year to seven.
• Drug-related crime increased from 106 to 121.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased from 39 to 64.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action remained the same at no cases.
Crime detected as a result of police action increased from 151 to 192.
• Kidnapping decreased from 13 cases the previous year to nine.
