Man shot as robbers fled the scene.

A manhunt is underway for a gang of eight men responsible for the bombing of an ATM at the Engen Garage at the Sherwood Shopping Centre in Brakpan North early this morning (Tuesday).

A 69-year-old man, who had been asleep in his car nearby, sustained multiple injuries when he was shot by the fleeing robbers.

According to information received, police were notified of the bombing at around 01:30. Employees told the responding officer five men entered the shop on the premises and demanded money.

While they helped themselves to cash and coins from the tills, three others rigged the ATM with explosives.

The robbers were armed with handguns and rifles. The ATM exploded, causing extensive damage, and also reportedly injured one of the robbers.

They took cash from the ATM and fled the scene on foot, opening fire on the man in the car. He sustained injuries to his chest, hip and legs, and was taken to hospital.
