Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from June 16 to 18.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A white Volkswagen Polo was stolen from Abercorn Avenue.

Saturday – Copper was stolen during a break-in at a scrap yard along Prince George Avenue.
• A motorbike was stolen from the corner of Prince George Avenue and Muir Avenue.

• Jewellery and other valuables were stolen during a burglary at a home along Wenden Avenue.

• A case of attempted robbery of a cash-in-transit vehicle was opened after a damaged gold-coloured Mercedes-Benz was found abandoned in Maryvlei.

Gauteng Highway Patrol officers were patrolling along the N17 highway at around 15:00 when they noticed a grey BMW 320i in the vicinity travelling in front of a cash-in-transit vehicle.

The occupants of the BMW appeared to be trying to block the cash van’s path. This aroused the officers’ suspicions and they set off to investigate.

While driving along Ergo Road, they came across the abandoned Mercedes in the middle of the street. The vehicle’s right fender and bumper were damaged.

It emerged the Mercedes was used to ram the cash van but the driver of the van managed to drive off. A white BMW is also believed to have been involved in the attempted crime.

A 5lt bottle of petrol was found on the driver’s seat of the Mercedes. It was also found the vehicle’s licence disc did not correspond with the car’s registration details. All role players were called to the scene, including the bomb squad.

Sunday – An attempt was made to steal a Volkswagen Kombi from an address along Frere Avenue. The owner of the vehicle returned to where it was parked and found it had been moved.

• A welding machine was stolen from the back of a bakkie parked along Park Street.

• A home in Ian Coetzer Road, Withok Estates, was burgled of two TVs and a sound bar.

• Four robbers made off with cash after robbing a family in their home in Mkhancwa Village, Maryvlei.

The incident took place at around 18:30. A man and his wife were outside in their yard when they saw four men approaching the gate.

The robbers, armed with guns, forced the couple into the garage and demanded money. The husband was assaulted and kicked.

The woman’s son arrived home from the shop and he was also forced inside the garage. The robbers continued to ask for money and wanted to know if there was a safe in the home.

They took the son into the house and returned to the garage a short while later demanding more money.

The robbers threatened to kill the woman’s son and took him with them when they left the property. He was taken to their vehicle but then let go.
