Looking back at 2022

Reflecting on last year's sporting action.

In the final edition of the Brakpan Herald last year, we looked at the sporting highlights from the first six months of the year. Now we reflect on the last six months.

July
Local netball star Nicole Gertenbach put on a top performance when she scored the winning goal for Ekurhuleni against Tshwane at the Gauteng Championships.

The month also saw CCC Brakpan Rugby Club qualify for the Valke League semi-final, only to come up short against Springs.

Despite a poor start to the season, the local club fixed some of their problems and went on a winning run that saw them qualify for the playoffs. It ended in heartbreak, however, when they lost to the eventual winners of the competition.

The Brakpan Indoor Centre hosted the South African Mixed Martial Arts Championships, which was dominated by Gauteng.

August
While their first team’s season ended in July, Brakpan Rugby Club’s U21 side continued to play scintillating rugby when they got to the final of the Valke league. They were narrowly beaten by North-West University in the season decider.

State Mines Country Club star, Casey Jarvis, joined the professional golf ranks. After a stellar amateur career, Jarvis felt it was time to play in the paid division.

September
The young boxer, Zeddrick Griffin, won the Gauteng Championships. Representing Ekurhuleni, the 12-year-old from Eagles Club showed his talent when he won the title.

October
Dalpark’s Chamone Olivier won the 80cm category at the national show jumping championships in Kyalami. The 15-year-old impressed and emerged victorious at the event.

Wrestler Ben van Rooyen won the World Masters Championships in Bulgaria. He beat Daniyar Yarmakhumedov of Kazakhstan.

The Valke U21 side, which boasted many Brakpan players, narrowly lost to the Griffons in the Currie Cup Shield.

November
Local athlete Clyde Locker completed his 100th parkrun. He ran most of the weekend events in Brakpan.
Brakpan’s Liezl O’Neill was named the 2022 Valke Rugby Referees Society’s female referee of the year. The official is a former player who stopped playing because of injuries.

December
The Brakpan parkrun announced a change in leadership. Jillian Sotto Corona and Damien Tomovic were named the club’s new directors.
