Would-be cable thieves nabbed

The trio face a charge of tampering with essential infrastructure.

EMPD officers and stakeholders from various law enforcement agencies intercepted three men who were trying to steal electrical cables in Vulcania South on January 24 at about 01:10.

Members received information from patrolling private security personnel about three men digging a trench in the field on 10th Street.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, the law enforcers cornered the trio, who were unlawfully digging a ditch just above where an 11kv electrical copper cable is secured.

The three suspects, in their 30s, attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief chase.

A pickaxe, a shovel and a utility knife were recovered on the scene.

The handcuffed suspects, facing a charge of tampering with essential infrastructure, were marched to the Brakpan police station and will soon appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.
