Word and Life Church hosts street shower, serving Brakpan’s homeless with care and support

The event took place in the parking lot of the Brakpan EMPD’s offices.

The Word and Life Church Sunward Park hosted Brakpan’s annual street shower on October 5 at the Brakpan EMPD offices, where homeless people and the needy received pampering, food and drink.

The beneficiaries arrived and were registered, 263 of them, before receiving toiletries and a fresh set of clothes so they could shower in the mobile showering unit.

After the shower, they had a medical checkup from the EMS Guardian Angels before getting a haircut and some chicken wraps, muffins, cupcakes, doughnuts, coffee, cold drinks, and water.

After receiving the food, they could get a pocket bible in any of SA’s 11 official languages at the Gideons Bible distribution stall, counselling and ministration.

Zoey and Koos Gouws from the Devoted Street Ministries NPO co-ordinated the event and received assistance from Werner and Jenny van Graan from the I Care Collective NPO.

The other sponsors included Afritech, Sky Rigging, Remington Supplies, Adullam Bikers Ecclesia, the Worthy Ministries NPO, the Bethel House NPO and the Gideons Brakpan branch. Psalm 91 Ministries and the Jesus Only Ministries also pitched in to make the day successful.

“The volunteers were the true heroes of the day. We are blessed to have been supported by the helping hands of our amazing brothers and sisters in Christ, who volunteered their time on this special occasion,” said Jenny.

“There were so many of you that it would be a shame to name individuals and risk leaving anyone out. Words cannot express our gratitude for your patience and kindness throughout the day.

“We thank the EMPD for allowing us to use their parking lot for the day. Additionally, we are grateful to RATA Social Development Offices for providing their kitchen facilities.

The beneficiaries had a health checkup, including measuring their pulse, oxygen and blood pressure.

“Now, turning to the heart of our event, our special guests from the Brakpan community, including those experiencing homelessness, those in need, and those facing tough times. We sincerely hope we served you well.

“This event was a year in the making, and it is remarkable to see how people come together when it truly matters.

“Serving others is a humbling experience, and we have the best example in Jesus Christ. To Him be all the glory, honour and praise.”
