Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from August 9 to 11.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A robbery was reported at a business along Victoria Falls Road in Anzac.

A gang of around 20 men gained access to the premises at around 01:40. Two employees were threatened with guns and forced inside an office.

The pair was tied up with shoelaces. After ransacking the building, the robbers fled with cellphones, a compressor and a fridge.

• A white Volkswagen Citi Golf was stolen from Carnival City.

• Tools were stolen during a break-in at a Prince George Avenue business.

Saturday – The driver of a white Opel Corsa was robbed of the vehicle along Heidelberg Road (R23), near Leachville at around 16:20.

The victim was forced to stop after a white Ford Ranger overtook him and then stopped in front of him, blocking the road.

Three men got out of the bakkie and one of them approached the victim. He pointed a gun at the victim’s head.

The victim then got out of the Corsa and the other two men forced him inside the bakkie.

The gunman got into the Corsa and drove off. The victim was driven around and robbed of his phone, house keys and driver’s licence. He was later released in Benoni. Cases of hijacking and kidnapping were opened.

• TVs, speakers and electrical appliances were stolen during a burglary at a business along Voortrekker Road.

• A woman from the Plastic City informal settlement was raped by a man known to her after he threatened her with a knife.

The man approached the woman at around 20:00 and offered to pay her for sex. When the victim refused, he pulled out a knife from his pocket and told her he would stab her.

He then dragged the victim to his shack, forced her to remove her clothes and raped her.

Sunday – Diesel valued at over R50 000 was stolen during a robbery at a Van Eck business. Six intruders overpowered a security guard patrolling the Afrikaaner Road premises at around 22:00.

The guard was assaulted and held at gunpoint. The robbers poured the diesel into containers, and also robbed the guard of his cellphone, his bank card and a torch.

• A man waiting for transport to church fell victim to three robbers.

The victim was waiting underneath the bridge along the N17 highway near Rand Collieries when he was approached by three men at around 10:00.

The men pulled out knives and a taser, and searched the victim taking his cellphone, R120 cash and wristwatch.

When the robbers told the victim to remove his clothing, he made a run for it and was shortly thereafter spotted by patrolling traffic police officers.

They stopped and asked the victim what was going on and he pointed to the robbers, now fleeing, in the distance.

The officers gave chase and were able to apprehend one suspect, who was found in possession of the victim’s cellphone and money. A knife was also found and seized. The suspect was arrested.

• A battery was stolen from a vehicle parked in a locked garage at a residence along Prince George Avenue in Brenthurst.

Tools were also taken from the garage.
