Carnival Night Run draws a big crowd

The trail run saw over 400 entrants competing in 5km and 10km races in the dark.

The Carnival Night Trail Run, hosted by SETech Sporting last Thursday at Carnival City, was a roaring success.

With 432 finishers listed on the BoutTime website, 141 10km runners, and 291 5km runners of all ages and genders, the turnout for the event was huge and the energy high.

The winners for the night were JP van der Berg, with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds in the 5km run, and Lesetja Papo with a time of 32 minutes and 23 seconds in the 10km run.

Lesetja Papo won the 10km race.

The event was hosted in collaboration with the Brakpan SPCA, who arranged for security, medics, and other volunteers to help manage the event, in exchange for SETech Sporting supporting their fundraising efforts, now and in the future.

This is according to Riaan van Zyl, vice-chairperson for the Brakpan SPCA, who was seen in a dog mascot suit at the event to promote the SPCA.

They also collected animal food and blanket donations from the runners and sold pancakes to raise funds for the branch.

Guardian Angels medics who volunteered at the event were Maria Schutte, Sonja Schutte, Marie Lewis, Susan Diedericks and Adriaan Diedericks.

There were also several teams running in support of the SPCA and Clean Brakpan, including some of the Clean Brakpan team, some members of Brakpan SAPS, and some firefighters from Fidelity Securefire, who completed the race in full firefighter gear.

The SPCA team raising funds at the event were Christine Venter (member), Tamaryn Lombaard (manager), Joggie Marais (chairperson) and Riaan van Zyl (vice-chairperson).
Fidelity Securefire’s Brakpan team competed in full firefighter gear. They are Damien Beech, Riaan van Zyl (SPCA vice-chairperson), Sfiso Masiteng and Martin Swanepoel.

Smanjhe Mhlanga from the Energy Department in Brakpan also donned a Clean Brakpan shirt and ran along. He lives in Dalpark Proper and has eight Comrades Marathon medals.

Another notable runner is André Smit, who is 70 and also an active member of Clean Brakpan with an unbelievable work ethic, according to Lisa Jordaan, Clean Brakpan secretary and public relations officer.
