Hijacking nightmare for Brakpan granny

The woman's grandson was with her during the ordeal.

A hijacker threatened to shoot a 69-year-old grandmother’s finger off to steal a ring she was wearing.

The Gladstone Avenue resident was attacked by three men outside her home last Tuesday afternoon.

Police reports reveal the victim, who was accompanied by her grandson, arrived home just before 15:00 and parked her vehicle outside to open the gates.

A BMW stopped in front of her car, a gold-coloured Volkswagen Polo Cross, and three men climbed out and approached her.

One of the men ordered the woman to get back into the Polo and she pleaded with him to let her and her grandson go.

The man ignored the woman’s pleas and she was forced inside, to the back of her car. Her grandson was still seated in the front.

While driving around with the pair, one of the hijackers demanded a ring the woman was wearing.
When she told him she couldn’t remove it, he threatened to shoot her finger.

The woman removed the piece of jewellery and handed it over. Her and her grandson were dropped off unharmed a few streets from home.

In a separate incident in Brakpan last Thursday evening, the driver of a black BMW 6 Series was injured after falling victim to hijackers in Leachville.

The driver returned to his car after a brief stop at a tuck shop along Kaapmuiden Avenue at around 20:30 when a man armed with a gun appeared at the driver’s side window.

He was joined by two accomplices, who threatened the driver’s passenger at gunpoint and pulled him out of the car.

The driver was also forced out of the car and a struggle ensued. The hijackers assaulted the driver, hitting him over the head with their weapons until he bled.

The driver and passenger were then forced into the back of the car and the hijackers drove off with them.

They demanded cash from the victims, which they did not have. The victims were then driven to Jan Smuts Park where they were released.

Both incidents are under investigation by Brakpan SAPS.
