Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from July 12 to 14.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A security guard on duty at a business in Uranium Road, Vulcania, was tied up by three robbers. The intruders, one of whom was armed with a gun, confronted the victim while he was alone in the guard room at around 01:35.

His colleague had just left to patrol the premises. The victim was told to shut up and lie on the floor. His hands and feet were then tied with cable. The robbers took two computer monitors, a remote and a cellphone.

Shortly after they fled, the victim’s colleague returned to the guard room, untied him and raised the alarm.

• Spotlights were stolen from a company along Lemmer Road in Vulcania.

• A business along Carmyllie Avenue in Dalview was broken into. It is believed the security alarm frightened off the intruders as only an extension cord was stolen. There was, however, damage to an electric fence and a door was forced open.

Saturday – A man was assaulted during an armed robbery at a Leachville church. Congregation members were preparing for the following day’s service when two men and a woman entered the church at around 22:20.

The men were armed with guns and the victims were instructed to lie on the floor. They were searched and robbed of their personal belongings, which included a set of car keys and cellphones.

A man was assaulted by the robbers as they demanded the PIN for his bank card. Before fleeing, the robbers warned the victims to remain on the floor. Other stolen goods include electric tools, a speaker, an extension cord and cash. A business robbery docket was opened.

• Two bicycles with a combined value of around R45 000 were stolen from an address along Crest Street in Sunair Park.

Sunday – Armed robbers pounced on the manager and owner of a Voortrekker Road roadhouse. The manager, a woman, was shot in the hand during the robbery, which took place at around 22:30.

After closing for the day, the owner headed to his car when he was approached by a balaclava-clad man armed with a gun, who demanded money.

The gunman took cash from the owner and also robbed him of two cellphones. He then went to a parked grey Kia and was joined by two gun-toting accomplices.

One of the men then fired a shot, which hit the manager in her hand. The bullet also struck the owner’s vehicle.

The manager was taken to hospital for medical attention. Cases of business robbery and attempted murder are under investigation.
