Man gets 10 years for tampering with infrastructure and theft

The man was arrested on the same day that he tampered with and stole essential infrastructure.

Thabo Shongwe (25) was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the Brakpan Regional Court on June 7, for one count of tampering with essential infrastructure and one count of theft.

The Brakpan resident was arrested on July 23, 2023, after stealing 35m of 4-core copper cables belonging to the City of Ekurhuleni, as well as security cameras and stainless steel worth around R1 000, belonging to Christiaan Goosen, on the same day.

He first appeared in court on September 27, 2023, and remained in custody while his case progressed.

He gave his not-guilty plea on May 6 of this year, was found guilty on both counts on June 7, and sentenced on the same day.

His sentence was 10 years each for both counts, and it was ordered to run concurrently.
