Brakpan SAPS, CPF host sports day for youth

The day was hosted to motivate the youth to participate in sports rather than do crime.

Mgongo FC from the Mgongo informal settlement (Brakpan Old Location) hosted a sports day with the Brakpan SAPS and the CPF on Saturday at the Old Location sports field.

There was soccer, netball, and various traditional games. Mercury Build It in Brakpan sponsored new kits for the Mgongo FC soccer and netball teams, while VC SPAR sponsored rolls and viennas for the players.

The sports day is part of the SAPS’ social crime prevention strategy aimed at supporting youth in endeavours like sports, arts and culture to keep them off the streets and away from crime.

Mgongo FC meets Mahlatse Skudu Makudubela, a former player for Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is the second year the SAPS and the CPF hosted this sports day, and they hope to make it an annual project, with sponsors and supporters increasing each year.

With sponsors, children from informal settlements participating in sports can establish formal clubs and register to compete in leagues, allowing them to get recognition for their sport.

“This type of recognition means a lot to these children, who otherwise would not have the opportunity, and it can be encouraging for them to work hard and stay disciplined,” explained Constable Audrey Buthelezi, the corporate communications officer for the Brakpan SAPS.
