Cable thief receives 13-year prison sentence

He dug up and stole three 10 meter sections of copper cables.

Garlito Sibanda (33) was sentenced to 13 years in prison on May 24 for tampering with essential infrastructure, theft of essential infrastructure and illegal immigration.

Sibanda, from the Mkhancwa Village informal settlement, was arrested on March 8, 2023, and appeared in the Brakpan Regional Court on January 17, where he pleaded not guilty to the essential infrastructure charges, but guilty to the illegal immigration charge.

He was found guilty on all counts on April 11, before being sentenced on May 24. He was sentenced to 12 years each for the infrastructure charges, to be served at the same time, and one year for illegal immigration.

Sibanda dug up and removed three 10-meter sections of underground single-core copper cables belonging to the City of Ekurhuleni on the date of his arrest.
