With winter upon us, the City's Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) issued safety tips for residents.

With winter at our doorsteps, the City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has shared precautionary tips with residents to keep them safe this winter.

William Ntladi, media liaison for DEMS said, “We need to be quite versatile and prepared for any eventualities in this wintertime.

“We need to be cautious when using heat sources, lighting and cooking sources. We need to ensure that smoke alarms are working and install them and that way we’ll be able to stay safe.”

He stressed that fireplaces need to be maintained before making any fires and that electrical outlets should not be overloaded.

Here are safety guidelines by DEMS:

• Never leave burning candles unattended

• Never leave cooking utensils unattended

• Flammable liquids should be stored safely

• Have an escape plan at home

• Stay alert at all times
