End of the road for suspected truck hijackers

A truck driver who had fallen victim to hijackers earlier this year recognised two of the men, and authorities were alerted.

EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit officers, in conjunction with Gauteng Traffic Police, arrested five men in Brakpan last Tuesday morning for suspected truck hijacking and business robbery.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers were conducting their duties when they were approached by a truck owner, who explained that his driver called him and mentioned he had seen the men he believed hijacked his truck in February along the R23.

“The officers asked if there was a case registered and there was confirmation. They made a follow-up and not long after, two men fitting the description were spotted next to a strategically parked BMW sedan with three male occupants,” said Thepa.

“On approach, the duo entered the sedan and all five drove away at high speed.

“With the assistance of passing Gauteng Traffic Police officers, a chase ensued and the fleeing BMW was cornered at the R554 and Van Dyk Road.

“The victim pointed out the two men that previously hijacked him, and the three other occupants in the BMW were linked to an alleged business robbery in Boksburg using the same vehicle.”

The men, aged between 32 and 56, face charges of truck hijacking and business robbery, and were detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

The BMW was impounded at the police yard, and thorough investigations are ongoing.
