Theft of and out of motor vehicles remain a problem in Brakpan

School events are still a major target for vehicle thefts, especially bakkies.

At last week’s monthly stakeholders meeting, hosted by Brakpan SAPS in the boardroom at the police station, attendees heard that car thefts and break-ins continue to increase.

High-end bakkies are still the most common targets, with Toyota and Ford being the main targets. Car thieves still operate largely at school events, and schools are reminded to reach out to SAPS, security companies or the CPF to schedule patrols to curb these thefts.

Theft out of motor vehicles is also still a problem, and simply locking your car and rolling up your windows is not enough to stop these thefts.

It is advised to keep valuables out of sight, in the boot or cubbyhole, or to take them with you when you leave.

Residential burglaries and theft are also picking up, with gate motors and security beams being targeted, as well as motorbikes and trailers that are visible in the yard and not parked in the garage.

House burglaries seem to be decreasing, but are still a problem in the outskirts of neighbourhoods, while common assault and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm remain a problem.

Shoplifting and hijackings are also a concern, and the station is expecting and preparing for major business and house burglaries. The next stakeholders meeting will be held on June 19 with the venue to be communicated.
