Motorists warned to watch out for bogus cops

EMPD warns against bogus police hijacking unsuspecting motorists.

Motorists are warned of bogus police who are doing rounds in the city. This comes after EMPD have seen an increase in the number of recent incidents where the suspects are taking advantage of helpless victims.

They disguise themselves as police by using police equipment and blue lights fitted on their vehicles, to hijack gullible victims and take their belongings. Some of the criminals demand cash and take the victims’ motor vehicles.

EMPD made it clear that no police officer may demand any cash deposit from anyone.

EMPD urged motorists not to stop should they suspect they are being stopped by ‘bogus police’.

They should drive to the nearest filling station immediately after noticing an unmarked vehicle stopped them.

Motorists are advised not to stop at any deserted spots, even to relieve themselves and when stopped to demand an appointment card from the officer with their rank, appointment date, picture, and infrastructure or personal number.

“We further want to reiterate that wearing of police uniform or using police equipment to perform any criminal activity to impersonate a police official is an offence ,” said EMPD.

“We appeal to communities to work with the police to report suspicious activities to bring these perpetrators to book and stop these criminal activities.”
