SPOT programme emphasises the importance of sterilising pets

A vet team from Pretoria carried out the sterlisations and were assisted by volunteers from SPOT.

Over 60 pets from low-income households were sterilised over the past weekend thanks to Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team (SPOT) NPC.

Sanette Bosman from SPOT told the Brakpan Herald the NPC’s main objective is to promote responsible pet ownership through education and assistance and also to prevent cruelty, neglect or abuse.

“The most important part of prevention for us is sterilisation which was the driving force to arrange a low-cost sterilisation campaign for our community,” she said.

These little furry friends were among the pets who benefitted from the programme.

Tassie with Love NPO and Glenda Fawbert sponsored the sterilisations either in full or part thereof to keep the cost as low as possible so owners who couldn’t afford the fee could either give a donation or receive a free sterilisation.

Vaccinations, tick and flea treatment, as well as deworming, were also included for each pet. The sterilisation programme saw a team from WanderVet in Pretoria visiting Brakpan.

This team, under the leadership of Dr Annerie Greyling, included veterinarians, vet students and nurses, and SPOT had several volunteers responsible for the arrangement and preparation of the weekend, as well as being hands-on during the two days.

More than 60 pets, both cats and dogs, were sterilised over the two days.

On Saturday, the team were at the Mgongo informal settlement (Location Road) where a local car wash owner closed his business for the day to allow the group to turn it into a fully functional operating theatre.

The team started at 06:00 and left just before 18:00 after the last patient went home. Thirty-two sterilisations were done on the day.

On Sunday, the team worked from the Just Wheels Club in Dalview and 37 pets were sterilised. SPOT is grateful to those who helped or contributed in any way.
