Spurs confident ahead of 10 year anniversary

The chairperson is looking forward to improving on the fifth place that the senior side finished at in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league.

This year marks 10 years since Brakpan Spurs Football Club came into existence and they plan to mark the year in style.

The club recently joined forces with Tsakane’s Super Eagles in a move that will see Spurs’ junior players training in Tsakani while the seniors will be based in Brakpan.

In December the club showed plenty of promise when they took part in a tournament that paid tribute to former Orlando Pirates star Joseph Makanya in Kagiso, Krugersdorp. The Brakpan side reached the semi-finals of the competition.

Club chairperson Jabulani Munene is excited ahead of the 2024 season.

“The season starts in March but we are starting to train on February 6,” he said.

“We’ll be training in the park, next to the bowling club as Brakpan Dolphins and Brakpan City share the stadium.”

Munene said the club will be playing their home games at Apex Grounds.

The chairperson is looking forward to improving on the fifth place that the senior side finished in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league. The U15 side came second in the league cup.

“We’ve recruited well with a number of players from Super Eagles joining us,” he told the Brakpan Herald.

“It will be a very strong team as Super Eagles was doing well.”

Munene believes that there will be trophies for his junior teams.

“Our juniors are very strong,” he said.

“They played in tournaments in December so it will be an advantage over other teams as they will be bringing in new players who still have to get used to each other.”

Munene also pointed out that his club will be celebrating their 10th anniversary by hosting a tournament.

“I’m still waiting for a suitable date from the ELFA to see when we can host the event. It will be a junior tournament from U10 to U15.”

There are other changes the chairperson will be implementing at the club.

“I’ve also decided that this year I won’t try to do everything myself,” he said.

“I’ve decided to get volunteers and senior players who will play different roles at the club. I will appoint head coaches, a club manager, kit managers and a secretary this weekend. My role, this year, is to oversee every department and just act as a founder.”

Spurs will be playing in the following tournaments before they get into league action:

• Bonaero FC tournament on February 24.
• Benoni Northerns tournament on March 9 and 10.
• Brakpan Spurs tournament on March 30 and 31.
