Sip ’n Crochet gets new venue

The monthly meeting has moved to Springs to accommodate the growing group of crocheters.

The monthly Sip ’n Crochet meetings hosted by Heather Bendeman have moved from the Brakpan Garden and Pet Centre to the Zonskyn Tea Garden and Event Venue in Springs.

The first meeting of the year was on January 13.

Sip ’n Crochet, which started in Brakpan last April, is a monthly meeting for crocheters of any skill level to come together and crochet for charity.

The main objective is to crochet the same size and texture granny squares and put them into “friendship blankets”. These blankets go to homeless people, charities, old age homes and shelters.

In December, the Eventide Old Age Home in Brakpan received five completed single-bed blankets, and they will receive more for residents in need.

The next meeting will focus on teaching the crocheters how to assemble the blankets. Usually, Heather, the host, and Debbie Grange, a member, collect the completed squares to take home and assemble. Now, some of the other more experienced members will also assemble blankets.

This is to take some pressure off Heather and Debbie. After next month, crocheters can put the blankets together themselves, saving them time and allowing more blankets to be made and donated.

The group use Charity double-knit wool to ensure everything has the same texture and size. A batch of wool has been sponsored for the next meeting, but Sip ’n Crochet needs more sponsors to continue its work.

Prospective donors, crocheters, or other interested parties may call Heather on 083 580 4756.
