Events must abide by the law

Events are held to the quality and safety standards of the Sasrea (2010) Act and need committee approval to be held.

Event organisers, companies, and individuals who plan to host sports and recreational events in the CoE are urged to abide by all the rules, especially the safety regulations, at all times in line with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (Sasrea), Act 2 of 2010.

A Sasrea committee presides over all the applications for events. Applications to host events must be submitted to the committee at least 21 days before the event takes place so enough time is given to the structure to consider all aspects of the gathering.

However, “in extraordinary and reasonable circumstances”, the Act allows the event to be approved at least 14 days before it takes place.

“The Sasrea Committee is made up of members from different departments. The officials have to evaluate the application for compliance based on their expertise and departmental regulations.

“One of the key elements of the committee is the safety of the public before, during and after the event. As a city, we are responsible for protecting the community, and we remain steadfast in our efforts to achieve this.

“If the application meets all the requirements of the Act, it receives a permit to go ahead. If not, it is not approved, and the organiser receives the reasons for such,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“It is important to note that under no circumstances will a permit be issued if an application was not submitted and jointly evaluated by the Sasrea Committee.”

The city wishes to clarify that any event held without approval from the Sasrea Committee is illegal, and the organisers risk criminal charges for hosting such an event.
