Cycle to restore the gift of sight

The event, which has raised over R10m in its 34-year history, aims to fight retinal blindness. All proceeds go to projects that find treatment for the disease.

The 35th edition of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight will take place at Boksburg Stadium on February 18 from 06:00.

The race will include the marquee 116km super classic, which attracts the country’s premium cyclists, the 62km DS 24 Challenge and the 8km fun ride.

The elite 116km race is a seeding event for the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg and 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Last year, Farrarmere resident and velodrome sensation Josh van Wyk successfully defended his James Cape Memorial Trophy after crossing the line first in the men’s 116km in 02:36:26, while Lize-Ann Louw took the first wheel in the women’s elite race in 03:18:46.

The event, which has raised over R10m in its 34-year history, aims to fight retinal blindness. All proceeds go to projects that find treatment for the disease. Volunteers, under the leadership of Retina SA, organise the event.

Entries opened in November and will close on February 5 at midnight.

Para-cycling
Retina SA said the event will be open to para-cyclists this year. He encouraged anyone interested in cycling to enter.

“We all know that physical fitness is a strong component of your general health and vision health. Our cycling event in February is open to everyone, regardless of your ability or background.

“Whether you are a visually impaired cyclist, a para-cyclist, a hand cyclist, or just passionate about making a difference, we invite you to be part of our mission to raise money for vital eye disease research.

“We have volunteer pilots with tandems who would love to assist you in getting into the sport of cycling. For the novices, there will be an 8 km- just for the fun – event and for the more adventurous, a 62km event.”
