Flooding of Brenthurst street causes havoc

Some of the water seeped into the surrounding yards.

With the arrival of the rainy season, flooding is becoming an issue due to blocked stormwater drains.

The corner of Tweedy and Collins roads in Brenthurst flooded severely on November 8 as a result of blocked drains.

Brenthurst resident Brandon Gey van Pittius reported the blocked drain and consequent flooding before bringing it to the attention of the Brakpan Herald.

“My neighbours and I have been in contact with the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) regarding a drain that is blocked next to us. At the moment no vehicle can move or drive on the road.

“The stench that comes from this water is unbearable. Our backyard is flooded with water every rainy season due to the blocked drain,” he said.

The city was asked why the drains were not cleaned in preparation for the rainy season, and what the turnaround time would be to clear out the drain.

“The city has cleaned the stormwater channel and believes flooding will not recur, as it was compounded by the blockages,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

No response was received on the reason for the drains not being cleaned before the rainy season.
