Sip ‘n crochet makes friendship blanket squares

The ladies and gentleman, enjoyed each other's company while working on crocheting the squares for blankets to be given to homeless people.

Sip ‘n Crochet is a new monthly event at the Brakpan Garden and Pet Centre at 148 Farquaharson Road in Rand Collieries.

The last event was October 14, where attendees crocheted granny squares for friendship blankets, which will be stitched together next month to be given to homeless people.

The event is a social and charity event, including a class on crochet techniques. Ladies book your spots, bring your hooks and scissors, and come to the class to crochet, eat good food and drink wine.

Your R200 fee pays for the wool you receive on the day and the support and guidance from seasoned crocheters.

It is an opportunity to learn from experts and make new friends while creating something for a good cause.

The October 14 group collectively crocheted just over 50 squares, and a blanket takes 42 squares. Attendees took home wool to crochet more squares to bring to the next meeting, where they will learn how to crochet them together into a blanket.

A few beginners had to be taught the basics, some of whom were encouraged to rather crochet chains to practice tension than attempt the squares. A few seasoned experts did the teaching.

Some attendees crocheted their own items, and the only male crocheter worked on a loom-knitted scarf instead of the squares.

The event, hosted by the Cro-Knitters Club, is in Springs. Interested parties can contact Heather Bendeman on 083 580 4756.
