Three tons and a fifer in round five of veterans’ league

Jacques Jonker, Johann Nel and Pieter Booysen scored centuries while Kyle Smit grabbed five wickets.

Round five of the East Rand Veterans’ League produced the goods as three batsmen scored centuries while one bowler took a five-wicket haul.

Johann Nel smashed an unbeaten 100 from 78 balls while Kyle Smit grabbed a five-wicket haul as the Benoni Sabres continued their march in the league with a thumping 140 runs victory over the Alberton Old Boys at CBC Boksburg on September 17.

The Sabres’ 282/4 was a long way over par as the Benonians quickly dispatched Alberton for 140 for their fourth win in five games.

Nel scored 12 boundaries, scoring his century with the third ball of the last over. He shared a 185-run third-wicket partnership with Graig Turton (92 from 63 balls).

Alberton’s run chase began with a wobble as Sabres bowlers, Chirag Parbhoo (2/11) and Tharushen Naidoo (1/30), ripped through the top order.

Smith then dismantled the middle order with a brilliant fifer, leaving Jaco Minaar to tear through the lower order with a wicket of Christo Breytenbach after Gerrit Smit was run-out by Naidoo.

Renegades beat Polys

Pieter Booysen’s 103 from 65 balls led the Kempton Park Renegades to a 129 runs victory against Bedfordview Polys.

Booysen scored six boundaries and four maximums as he led his team to 259/4. He was assisted by Simion Muller who smashed 47 from 54 balls with six fours while Akther Rasul scored 23 runs from 23 balls.

In response, the Polys were restricted to 130/8 as Len Meyer (3/44), Jaco Barkhuizen (2/8) and Thys Neethling (2/21) enjoyed good spells with the ball.

Rebels cement top spot

Jacques Jonker’s quick-fire 100 from 61 balls saw the Kempton Park Rebels tighten their grip on top spot as they beat the Elsburg Eagles by 54 runs.

The opener scored 11 fours and four sixes as his ton helped the Rebels to 275/6, setting their opponents 276 to win.

Despite the Eagles coming to within reach of the target, with Mark Ryzeburg (47), Jaco van der Merwe (43) and EJ van Niekerk (38) as well as Marthinus Grobler (34) starring with the bat, they fell 54 runs short as they only managed 221/4 in their 30 overs.

Steyn and Ferreira star as Scimitars win

The Benoni Scimitars smashed Springs Old Boys by a massive 185 runs to move within two points of first place.

Andre Steyn (76) and Gavin Ferreira (68) starred with the ball while Jan Grobbelaar (40) and Roland Braun (40) had decent spells as well as they took the Scimitars to 288/5, setting Springs 289 to win.

That target was a long way over par as the Scimitars dispatched their opponents for 103 with Willem Volmenk and Mohammed Teladia taking three wickets each.

Zano Mguni took two scalps while Shailoo Parbhoo and Grobbelaar grabbed a wicket apiece.
