J&G Auto Electrical and Mechanical soup kitchen grows

What started out as once-a-month with three businesses has now grown to 10 businesses and several private families serving food to the needy every other week.

J&G Auto Electrical and Mechanical held their bi-weekly soup kitchen for underprivileged people in Brakpan last Friday.

They, in partnership with several other sponsors, host this soup kitchen across the street from their shop at 336 Vortrekker Road every other Friday.

They typically hand out cups of nutritious chicken and vegetable soup, a generous serving of bread, and if donations allow, a fruit too.

Once everyone who comes to collect food has finished and they have food left, they also drive around town with the remaining food to hand out to more people in need.

What started as a once-a-month occurrence grew to a bi-weekly event with the help of a growing list of sponsors and volunteers.

The businesses that contribute to the soup kitchen have grown from just a few to 10. It is predicted to become even more as the soup kitchen continues to grow.

The founding business is J&G, but other businesses involved, either as volunteers or donors, are Krap en Kry, Corner Carwash, Housewives Trust, RBT Republic Bus and Truck, Lag en Leer afterschool centre, Hanlie’s Cleaning Service, O&H Paints, Visible Signs and Phoenix Equipment Repair Services.

Some private families who wish to remain anonymous are also involved in the cause. Last week the kitchen could offer 11 pots of soup, almost 100 loaves of bread and a large bag of naartjies.

Volunteers started spreading butter on bread in the early morning hours.

“For me, it’s about getting people fed, but especially the children and elderly who are most vulnerable. They don’t deserve the hand they are dealt, and we want to help,” said Ordette Lottering, one of the founding members of the kitchen.
