Muriel Brand learner bags gold in the Caribbean

Daniel Molobela competed in the para-sport category and was among the first batch of para-athletes to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

Tsakani – Discus athlete Daniel Molobela is a Commonwealth Games gold medalist after competing in Trinidad and Tobago last week.

The 17-year-old learner from Muriel Brand School was part of Team SA representing the country at the international competition.

He competed in the para-sport category and was among the first batch of para-athletes to participate in the tournament.

The multi-sport event saw athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations compete in seven sports – athletics, beach volleyball, cycling, netball, rugby sevens, swimming and triathlon.

Team SA finished fourth and claimed 20 medals – seven gold, six silver and seven bronze.

Molobela’s mother, Hellen, said she was proud of her son for making it so far in the competition.

“I could not believe my ears when he told me he had qualified to compete in the competition during the Toyota SA Sports Association hosted in Cape Town.

“I know he started, but I didn’t think he would go that far in an international competition to win a gold medal.

“This is a blessing I will forever cherish,” she added.

The proud mother encouraged other parents of children with special needs to enrol them in schools that accommodate those needs.

“This allows them to reach their potential and excel and be empowered,” she added.

Molobela also participated in javelin and shot-put.
