Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from August 11 to 13.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A business along Ergo Road in Maryvlei was burgled of a fridge, a freezer, a washing machine and a TV.

• A car parked at an address along Olga Street in Brenthurst was broken into. The vehicle’s radio was stolen.

• The rider of a Big Boy scooter was robbed of his bike at the corner of Hospital Road and Jansen Street in Brakpan North.

The hijacking took place at around 20:30. A white Volkswagen Golf with four occupants pulled up alongside the victim. A passenger in the Golf opened the car’s window and pushed the victim, causing him to fall.

The victim ran to nearby bushes for safety and one of the occupants of the Golf fired a shot. The foursome then drove off but returned shortly afterwards accompanied by another vehicle. The victim’s scooter was loaded into this vehicle and the cars drove off.

Saturday – A length of cable valued at over R10 000 was stolen from a business along Heidelberg Road (R23) in Withok Estates.

The robbers gained access to the property at around 19:45 and confronted security guards in the guard room.
The intruders were all armed with guns.

Sunday – A TV, a gaming console, kitchen appliances and other household items were stolen during a break-in at a home along Elliot Road.

• Cables and a transformer were stolen during an armed robbery at a company in 16th Road, Witpoort Estates.
Two security guards were overpowered by five intruders at around 03:45. The guards were tied up with shoelaces and rope. They were robbed of their cellphones and a two-way radio.

• A Leachville woman and her three children were robbed in their Privet Avenue home by two men pretending to be law enforcers. The woman answered a knock at the door just after 16:00 and was greeted by two men who introduced themselves as police officers.

They told her they were looking for the “man of the house”. The woman told the pair he was not at home and they then demanded to be let inside to search the home. One of the men pushed her aside and took out a gun.

He forced her into the sitting room with her children and told her to stay put. One of the men took the woman’s cellphone and instructed her to open the banking app.

The other robber searched the house and later joined his accomplice with money he had found in the woman’s bedroom.

The robbers also took four cellphones and a laptop. The woman and her children were locked in the house and the robbers fled in an unidentified grey car.
