The first-ever SEESA Jozi Triathlon will be hosted at Ebotse Golf and Country Estate on October 21. The event will start at 08:00 with a full programme on offer for athletes of all ages and fitness levels.

“We are really excited to launch this event. The vision is clear, we are looking at bringing back the old Energade Series that was so popular in the 90s and early 2000s.

“We also have ambitions to host the national championships and if all goes well, bring a World Cup Triathlon back to the shores of South Africa. First, we must start small and this race is the launch pad for bigger and better to come,” said organiser Glen Gore.

Gore said the target market is youngsters, with a schools section similar to the one they had in the Energade Series.

“The idea is to get all the schools involved to create a safe space for active participation in the sports of swim, biking, and run. The school that sends the biggest amount of competitors to this event will also receive a cash fundraiser injection.”

“We are also after the “not-so-fit” weekend warrior. Our Super Sprint and Sprint Distance Triathlon allows for those that are not super fit to participate, finish the distances comfortably with a smile on their face.

According to Gore, the country’s premier triathletes will also be present.

“We can expect our top juniors from around the country to come and compete for the podium positions as well as our top age groupers who perform best over the Olympic Distance.

“There will also be a drive to foster development with a number of development athletes being invited to compete in this triathlon event.

“An additional feature is the introduction of the Super Sprint Triathlon Relay which will take place after all the main events are complete. This event is based on the Olympic Games Team Relay where we have a team of four (two ladies and two gents) competing in a relay format over a very short distance.

“This is a great way to get more families, schools and triathlon teams involved. With the distances being so short, athletes are easily able to compete in their main event and then compete in the team relay at the end.

“We see this team relay concept growing into something really big. Hopefully, we can offer the national team relay championships in the not too distance future.”
