Theatre lovers invited to watch 1789 at Sibikwa Arts Centre
Attendees can expect a thrilling musical and an interactive play.
Crew and cast members of the epic theatre piece 1789 are gearing up for an unforgettable show set to intrigue viewers with its unique storytelling.
The production, supported by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Institute in Paris and the City of Paris, will open to the public on Bastille Day, July 14, at the Sibikwa Arts Centre in Benoni.
Preview shows will take place on July 11 and 12.
The art centre has partnered with the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and Théâtre du Soleil to bring theatre lovers Ariane Mnouchkine’s theatre piece 1789.
Directed by veteran South African directors Phyllis Klotz and Smal Ndaba, the play will transport its audience to the streets of Paris. It is a time when the country is in turmoil and on the brink of a revolution.
Follow the journey of a range of citizens and the rise against an oppressive regime in the quest for liberty, equality and fraternity.
The play will also raise profound questions about democracy, an appreciation of the power of unity and, hopefully, a desire for further debate.
Speaking to Toni Morkel during the production rehearsal day on July 4, she said attendees could expect a thrilling musical and an interactive play which has required physical strength from its cast of 22 members.
Tickets for the preview show cost R50. Tickets for the opening show are available on sale on Quicket.
Ticketing options include: a single ticket is R100, a ticket and a light French meal is R200 and a ticket, shuttle from Rosebank Mall and a light French meal is R300.
