Man denied bail after opening false theft case

Lying to police is a criminal offence.

Brakpan SAPS hope the recent arrest of a 43-year-old man for perjury will serve as a warning to others thinking of lying to police.

The man, from Orange Farm in Johannesburg, opened a case of motor vehicle theft at the Brakpan Police Station on February 24.

He claimed his 2019 white Volkswagen Polo was stolen from an address in Maryvlei.

“While the police were still probing the theft, employees at a local pawn shop sought assistance from police to check one of the motor vehicles at the shop because they suspected foul play,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi,

Brakpan SAPS communications officer.

“The police realised that the motor vehicle they were called to check was the same motor vehicle reported as stolen.

“Upon inquiry at the pawn shop, the police discovered that the owner of the vehicle exchanged his vehicle for cash.

“The police then summoned the male to the police station, where he was interviewed and detained for lying to the police.”

Buthelezi told the Brakpan Herald the man appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday and was denied bail.

“This is a typical scenario and a lesson to the public that lying under oath is a criminal offense. The police will leave no stone unturned when it comes to criminality.” she added.
