Residents march to Brakpan municipal offices

The march was peaceful and the protesters dispersed after engaging with Ward 97 Clr Brandon Pretorius.

Residents from various informal settlements marched to the Brakpan Customer Care Centre (CCC) on Monday morning to air their grievances.

Among the protesters were residents from Mgongo (Old Location), Magaleni (Brakpan North), Plastic City, Never-Never (Springs) and those known as backyard dwellers, mostly from Brakpan central.

Police visibility was high because the EMPD and the SAPS were present.

The Brakpan Herald understands the grievances stem from a meeting last July between residents of Mgongo and the former Ekurhuleni MMC for Human Settlements where, it is claimed, an agreement was reached to relocate the residents to permanent stands with electricity.

Brandon Pretorius, the councillor for Ward 97 – where many of the settlements are – met with a committee from the group of protesters at the Brakpan CCC.

The committee comprised a representative from each settlement.

Talking about the grievances, Pretorius told the Herald they would reconvene with the relevant municipal departments on Wednesday.

The protesters dispersed after the meeting between Pretorius and the committee.
