Nothing too sacred for these thieves

Churches are being targeted by criminals.

Fidelity ADT is concerned to see a new worrying trend across Gauteng where a group of thieves are breaking into churches and making off with musical instruments and other valuables.

Between February 11 and 16, there were reported break-ins at churches of three neighbouring suburbs in the Johannesburg area.

Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications from Fidelity ADT, said it is unclear if the same group is responsible but the modus operandi is similar.

Hattingh said the intruders made off with a variety of different musical instruments and sound equipment.

“In each of the cases access was gained by breaking a door or window and then forcing open the burglar bars,” she said.

She said in the northern region, in Pretoria and surrounds, the crime seems to be opportunistic.

“While congregants are praying, cellphones and bags are being stolen. Usually, a man and a woman work together.

“The woman walks out of the church carrying the bag, making it difficult for security to know if the bag is stolen or not.

“These thieves are also taking advantage of load-shedding and often strike during these times. Clearly, there is a grey market for these musical instruments, which is exacerbating the problem.

“Tightening up small vulnerabilities can amount to a huge relief when it comes to personal security. Remain vigilant and do not leave anything to chance,” added Hattingh.
