Adjustment budget voted against

Latest council meeting saw speaker ousted and opposition parties voting against the adjustment budget.

Ekurhuleni MMC for Finance, Economic Development and Information Communication Fanyana Nkosi stated the multi-party coalition remains committed to ensuring all residents receive service delivery regardless of the will of some political parties to undermine the government at all costs.

This follows Thursday’s council meeting during which the ANC, EFF and the Super Seven blocked the adjustment budget.

The meeting also saw council speaker Raymond Dlamini removed in a vote of no confidence. EFF Clr Nthabiseng Tshivhenga was re-elected as the interim speaker.

“After a month of delay due to political conniving, the much-needed adjustment budget brought to council was voted against by opponents of service delivery,” said Nkosi.

“An adjustment budget is crucial in realigning the city’s finances to express the needs on the ground.

“This adjustment budget would have injected much-needed funds to mitigate the current waste backlogs felt across the length of the city. Additional trucks to replace the ageing waste fleet will not be purchased.”

Nkosi explained the adjustment would also have made a significant impact on improving the condition of roads, which have become riddled with potholes, along with ensuring that grass-cutting takes place, cemeteries are cleaned up and inner cities and townships are serviced with dignity.

“Unfortunately, certain political parties have chosen to put their narrow interests ahead of residents whom they were elected to serve,” he added.
