Artist wants to bring joy back to Brakpan

He has been painting all his life, but most enjoys depicting scenes that bring people joy.

Artist Mike Slattery (62), well-known in Brakpan for his murals, painted a new mural in Brenthurst.

At the start of Covid, the Brenthurst resident started to busk to bring joy during bad times and was well-received and supported by the public.

The new mural is a thanks to the public for their support.

Slattery is a pensioner who makes most of his money through busking and painting. However, his true passion is encouraging people and putting a smile on their faces.

He has made art throughout his life, and his most notable piece is the 19m mural at Brenthurst Primary school.

About five years ago, he had a stroke. He again started to paint murals and do paintings to teach himself how to function and speak.

During this time, many people encouraged him to keep going and working. Soon he recovered from his stroke by doing what he loved.

When asked what his favourite style is, Slattery said: “I like to try many different styles and paint what makes people happy, what they like.

“I like painting restful, peaceful scenes and landscapes. Someone asked me why I do not paint political statements, and I told them I don’t want to rile people. I want my art to make people happy and peaceful.”

Slattery still sells his art and paints murals on commission. He would appreciate any support, but what he wants the most is for people to be happy.

He wants to see people in Brakpan stand up and encourage each other and spread joy, not anger.

Most days, Slattery is in the vicinity of Rook Street in Brenthurst or contact him on 084 065 2545.
