Geluksdal Secondary School learner stabbed to death

Geluksdal Secondary School learners threaten to fight back against gangsters.

Tsakani – Learners from Geluksdal Secondary School are threatening to continue fighting until all members of gangs terrorising their school are arrested.

This is after 17-year-old Grade 10 learner Shaun Mphela from the school was stabbed to death on Thursday afternoon.

It is alleged a fight broke out after three Grade 10 boy learners pepper sprayed other learners in class.

Shaun and other learners called out the group but the disgruntled learners threatened that they will meet them outside the school premises.

It is alleged the group alerted elder gang members aged 30, 31 and 35 who waited for Shaun and his friends outside the school grounds and attacked them.

During the fight, one of the attackers was assaulted by the learners and the other two managed to flee the scene.

On Friday morning, learners took to the streets of Geluksdal searching for the two who were still on the run. They vandalised a house where one of the suspects was found hiding. He was later rescued by the police.

The deceased’s father, Seun Mahlangu, said he knows of three criminal cases that were reported to local police where his son was stabbed, assaulted and threatened by the same gang.

“The suspects are known. I even traced their addresses and names and gave them to the investigating officer but they are still roaming the streets.

“In September I had to come to collect my son from school because the gang members were waiting for him outside the school premises threatening his life,” he said.

The father said he was planning to remove his son from the school and had recently received an acceptance message from a FET College.

During his visit to the school, MEC of Education in Gauteng Matome Shiloane, said he is disappointed the school is still battling racial segregation.

“We will appoint security guards at the school to ensure the safety of learners,” he said.

Tsakani police spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu confirmed three suspects have been arrested and will appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court.
