City of Ekurhuleni to do waste collection this weekend to address backlogs

Waste collection to happen this Saturday to address backlogs.

The City of Ekurhuleni will be doing waste collection rounds this weekend to address all existing backlogs

The areas that are targeted for waste removal are Springs, Brakpan, Nigel, Benoni, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Boksburg and Germiston.

Residents of these areas are encouraged to take out their wheelie bins and plastic bags so that they are not missed by the teams as they collect the waste.

The city undertakes to address the backlogs on the weekend to enable normal round collections to get underway as early as Monday next week.

The latest development comes following the decision by the city to establish a waste management task team to address waste collection challenges in the region.

This move followed numerous complaints of no collection of waste in certain areas, especially Springs, Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni and Edenvale.

The main block was the unavailability of enough trucks due to breakdowns. The city has, however, managed to get some of the vehicles back and distribute them accordingly to ensure that the service is normalised as soon as possible.

Yesterday the city announced that services had also resumed in outsourced areas after a dispute over payments was resolved with service providers.

These areas are Tsakane/Langaville, Wattville, Daveyton-Etwatwa, Duduza, Kwa-Thema, Tembisa 1 & 2, Norkem Park, Thokoza and Palmridge.

The city again apologised profusely to the communities for the inconvenience caused recently and can assure residents that it remains committed to a cleaner and healthier Ekurhuleni.

The city further thanks residents for their patience during these difficult days.

The city pleads with residents who continue to experience waste removal challenges to report it via the call centre on 0860 54 3000.
