Fleeing victim shot at during street robbery

The man escaped injury and one of his attackers was arrested.

A lunchtime break almost turned deadly for a local worker last Wednesday afternoon when he fell victim to two armed robbers.

The victim, who works in Vulcania, was on his way to withdraw cash during his lunch break when he was confronted by two men while walking along Tweedy Road near the Schapenrust railway lines in Brenthurst.

According to information received from Brakpan SAPS, one of the robbers threatened him with a gun and the other with a knife.

The victim was robbed of his house keys, cellphone and wallet containing his bank card.

The robbers demanded the PIN for the card and warned the victim he would be killed if he gave them the wrong number.

The gunman instructed his accomplice to go to a nearby ATM to withdraw cash while he stayed behind and kept watch over the victim.

While his captor was distracted by his cellphone, the victim decided to make his escape.

He ran off and the gunman fired two shots at him, both of which missed their intended target.

The victim sought help from private security personnel in the vicinity and the police were called.

One suspect was arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station. He faces charges of attempted murder and armed robbery.
