Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from October 28 to 30.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

Friday – A man was robbed of R120 000 after meeting up with two men with whom he was supposed to attend an auction. The victim met one of the men at a livestock auction a few days prior.

He told the victim he knows of an auction with cheaper deals. They met up in Brakpan on Thursday and agreed to meet again the following day to attend the auction. On Friday, the victim again met up with the man, who was accompanied by a friend, and they set off for the auction.

While driving along Electron Avenue in Vulcania at around 09:00 the men, travelling in the victim’s car, stopped on the roadside to urinate. The pair then threatened the victim with firearms and demanded his money. They took the cash and fled on foot.

• Two men walking along 10th Street in Withok Estates were robbed at 17:10. The victims were confronted by three men – two armed with guns and the third brandishing a knife. The pair was searched and one of the victims was assaulted. The robbers fled with R2 200 in cash and a cellphone.

• A case of attempted murder is under investigation after a motorist was shot at along Springs Road in Rand Collieries at around 18:30.

The victim, travelling in a white Honda, was forced to stop when the occupants of a grey BMW overtook her and pulled in front of her. Two men climbed out of the BMW and approached the victim’s car, with one of the men trying to open the passenger side door which was locked.

He then fired shots at the passenger side window and bonnet. The victim was able to drive off and escaped serious injury. She sustained a cut to her neck from the shattered window glass.

• A shoot-out between two gunmen and security personnel took place at a business along 1st Road in Maryvlei. The pair gained access to the premises at around 22:45 and held up two guards in the guardroom.

They took a cellphone, a panic button and a remote for the gate. As they fled, a response vehicle arrived and a shoot-out ensued. The robbers evaded capture.

Saturday – A truck driver was hijacked in Maryvlei by four men. The driver had been sent to a business along 11th Road to collect a load of sand. Upon his arrival at around 13:00, he was met by two men who told him the sand was at a different location.

They also told him they needed to fetch the forklift driver. The victim drove to 13th Road with the pair where a man, said to be the forklift driver, was waiting. When the victim stopped the truck, one of the men threatened him with a firearm.

His hands and feet were tied with shoelaces and he was taken to a secluded bushy area where he was robbed of two cellphones and his wallet. The trio were joined by a fourth accomplice.

After his attackers fled, the victim untied himself and sought help at the business premises along 11th Road.
The truck was later recovered in Kwa-Thema.

Sunday – A home along Lanzerac Street in Sonneveld was burgled of cash, laptops and other valuables.

• A Station Road bottle store was robbed by a gang of eight men at about 14:30. The robbers were all armed with guns and threatened an employee and a security guard. They fled with cash, cigarettes, an iPhone and liquor.
