Performers to showcase their talent in USA

Students from local performance academy excelled at recent competition.

The bright lights of America await several students from Brakpan-based Bravo! Performance Academy after they were selected to showcase their talents abroad in an international competition.

The academy is situated in Kenleaf and is an all-rounder performance academy providing music (piano, vocal, music theory) and drama classes for all ages.

Fourteen students recently participated in the national round of Talent Africa SA where they obtained impressive results, with nine chosen to represent the country in New Jersey, USA, in July next year.

Talent Africa SA is one of the country’s most prestigious and longest-running competitions with regional, national and international rounds.

The students who participated were:
• Larizta Booyens (chosen to represent SA)
• Leandre Backhouse
• Leane Leonard
• Kylie Calasa (chosen to represent SA)
• Roland le Roux
• Amore Backhouse
• Emma-Rae Rieger (chosen to represent SA)
• Marli Horn
• Madison Griffin (chosen to represent SA)
• Lihane Durand (chosen to represent SA)
• Juliana du Plessis (chosen to represent SA)
• Bianca van Jaarsveld (chosen to represent SA)
• Zoe Muller (chosen to represent SA)
• Magdelie Dormehl (chosen to represent SA)
Overall, they collectively received 72 medals – nine bronze, 37 silver and 26 gold.
Some were also the recipients of special awards. They are:
• Laritza Booyens – Top 10 Vocalist Jnr and Best Mic Technique
• Kylie Calasa – Overall Best Jnr Orator, Top 10 Best Jnr Actor and Most Promising Speaker
• Zoe Muller – Top 10 Snr Actor
• Juliana van Jaarsveld – Best Mic Technique
• Madison Griffin – Top 10 Jnr Vocalist

Bravo! Performance Academy also bagged the honour of Top Vocal Studio (national level).

“This was our first year competing at Talent Africa and all of us went into it with open minds as we didn’t really know what to expect and I didn’t want to get all the students’ hopes up,” said academy owner Laura-Lee Schutte.

“They blew us away and really exceeded our expectations performing on stage. I am blown away by their resilience, hard work and determination throughout the competition. I am so proud and blessed to teach these future performers. Bravo and congratulations to you all.”
