Two die in supermarket robbery

The Voortrekker Road shop was targeted by a gang of armed men on Saturday evening.

Two Bangladeshi nationals were killed during a robbery at a Voortrekker Road supermarket on July 23.

“Three males entered the store at 20:20. They were all armed with handguns and demanded money,” said Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad.

“They took all the money out of the tills.”

Van Staad told the Herald that two other robbers stood guard at the store’s entrance and threatened two employees at gunpoint.

“The males in the store then ran out of the shop firing shots at the two employees at the door,” she said.

One of the employees sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died on the scene.

“When the paramedics arrived, the second employee also died,” added the spokesperson.

According to van Staad, paramedics could not find any bullet wounds on this victim and the cause of his death is unclear.

The robbers fled the scene in a dark-coloured Volkswagen Passat with a loot of about R10 000. Six cartridges were found on the scene. Cases of business robbery and murder are under investigation.
