The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund will host an inaugural fun walk on July 16 at the Johannesburg Zoo.
The route will include a 5km fun walk within the zoo to allow all stakeholders an experience of the significance of walking for a good cause.
Lunga Kupiso, senior PR account manager of M&C Saatchi Sport and Entertainment, said they wanted to use the weekend as an opportunity for children and their families to participate in the event because weekdays limit the ability to attend the event, especially with schools reopening.
“The walk is a great opportunity for us to celebrate children whilst marking Mandela’s birthday as a tradition of the fund that he had started.
“After two years of lockdown, we thought this would be a great way to allow children to gather and be active again in a friendly and safe environment,” said Kupiso.
Kupiso mentioned that their call to support the work of the fund is also ongoing and will form part of the event as their theme is ‘Walking the extra mile so vulnerable children don’t have to’.
“This year’s edition is a closed-off event for the NMCFs beneficiaries and stakeholders as the fund builds up for a possible open for the rest of the wider community to participate soon.

“We welcome support from the public in various forms for those who want to support Madiba’s vision for children. The support can be in form of any donation,” said Kupiso.
Attendees of the event will include Mpho Phalatse (Mayor of Johannesburg), Stanley Maphosa (Interim CEO), Khensani Nobanda (Nedbank executive head, group marketing and corporate affairs), Nonkululeko Boikhutso (Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital), Nomthi Mnisi (chief business engagement officer) and Ayabulela Poro (communications and marketing manager).
Stakeholders and beneficiaries of the fund will also attend.
