Brakpan crushes United

Brakpan is currently third on the Valke Peregrine log behind Springs and Vereeniging.

CCC Brakpan Rugby Club seems to have turned their season around. They crushed East Rand United 44-17 in an away game.

Brakpan’s forwards may have struggled earlier this season but that seems to be in the past as they dominated United’s scrum and most facets of the game.

The two sides may have been locked at 10-all early in the game but that was the only time the match resembled a close tie.

Brakpan’s forwards provided the perfect platform for their backline to terrorise the opposition.

Tries by Jaun Pachonick, Franco Booysen, David Woolls (twice), George Giessing and Deon Vos saw the visitors destroy United.

Andrew van Wyk kicked over three conversions and one penalty while PJ Beukes got a penalty and a conversion.

“It was a good game because East Rand United beat North-West University the week before,” said Brakpan’s chairperson Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“It was a tough tussle in the first 10 to 15 minutes and then our forwards got on the front foot. The team did what it was supposed to do. The scoreline says it all, especially against East Rand United. So that was very good.”

Nieuwenhuis believes his players, who had not played together a lot before this season, are starting to gel.

He also thinks the rigorous fitness training sessions that they have been going through are starting to pay off.

“We spend a lot of time on scrummaging and this has also helped with the team spirit as well,” said the chairperson.

“Once we got that one win (over Benoni) things started changing. It’s a winning culture we must create within the team and I think it took a while but things are clicking into place.”

Brakpan is third on the Valke Peregrine log behind Springs and Vereeniging.

“As long as you are in the top four you will be in the semi-finals,” he said.

“At this point, it’s still good. We must still play Benoni, Boksburg, Vereeniging and Springs. Springs is the big challenge but we have the right attitude now.”

Brakpan will be out of action for the next two weekends.

“We gave the guys off this week but next week they’ll be back with serious training. Time off will help players to recover from injury niggles,” said Nieuwenhuis.

Brakpan’s second team beat United 31-17. Like the first team, they are also third on the log.

The U21 side is having the perfect season having won all their matches. They lead the log.
