Taxi driver gunned down near busy Brakpan intersection

The victim died in a hail of bullets after stopping to pick up passengers.

Brakpan police are investigating a taxi violence-related incident after a taxi driver was gunned down along Airport Drive, opposite the Mall@Carnival, last night (Tuesday).

The incident reportedly occurred at around 17:45.

Local SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad told the Herald police upon arrival found the 30-year-old driver of a white Toyota Quantum lying on the roadside.

He had been shot several times and sustained injuries to his head and chest.

“It is alleged he parked his taxi on the side of the road waiting for passengers when a white Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI stopped next to his taxi and the occupants opened fire at the driver while he was seated in the vehicle,” said van Staad.

“He got out of the taxi and ran across the street where the gunmen followed him and continued shooting at him, even after he fell to the ground.”

Two men were seen alighting from the Golf, which had no registration plates.

“About 25 9mm cartridges were found on the scene,” said van Staad, adding that members from the Taxi Violence Unit attended the crime scene.

The owner of the taxi also arrived and identified the deceased.

A case of murder has been opened.
