Graham Gersbach resigns from MMC position, but remains Ekurhuleni DA councillor

It’s hardly six months since Graham Gersbach was appointed MMC when the multi-party coalition government took over the City late last year.

Ekurhuleni MMC for Finance and Economic Development Graham Gersbach called it quits on May 10.

He said it was one of the toughest decisions of his life. It follows a disagreement that has led to discord between him and Mayor Tania Campbell.

On May 11, Gersbach shared a message suggesting that there had been a lack of agreement or perfect harmony between him and Campbell, whom he accused of criticising and disagreeing with his decisions.

“I had done what I believed was the right thing to do and released the inputs received through the budget tips email address to all councillors as I believe in transparency.

“I had not as yet received the consolidated reports from the IDP meetings and other sources but would have done the same with those.

“The mayor was not happy with my decision and as I felt my principled decision was not in line with her views, it was best to resign as an MMC.

“What concerns me is that officials have almost finalised the revised budget and adjustment budget without any evidence of responses to all inputs received. This is not in line with meaningful public participation I have always believed the DA truly believes in.

“Even if you disagree with the inputs you need to respond with reasons. This is not easy but is the right thing to do,” said Gersbach in the letter.

Gersbach, however, pointed out that he still believes in the principles and values of the DA, and will continue to speak up when and where he believes it is needed.

“I will remain a DA councillor as I feel I still have a contribution to make. Wishing the mayoral committee and all concerned all the best in their future endeavours, but I will always question when I feel it is necessary,” vowed Gersbach.

Gersbach was expected to deliver the City’s budget speech on May 25. The mayor’s office has not yet responded to our request for comment on this issue.
