Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to Brakpan police from May 6 to 8.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

Friday – A school child was robbed at gunpoint along Rangeview Road in Dalpark.

The victim was walking to school just before 08:00 when he was approached by three men who threatened him with a firearm and demanded his cellphone. The youngster did not have a cellphone, so the robbers fled with his school books, a jacket and R10.

• A shopkeeper was shot when he tried to intervene during a robbery at a store along Goods Road. Two gunmen entered the shop at around 18:40 and demanded money from the owner.

One of the robbers kept a watch over the owner while the other took money from the till. A neighbouring shopkeeper then entered the store and confronted the robber raiding the till.

The robber fired a shot at the shopkeeper and chased after him when he ran out of the store. His accomplice then followed. They fled with R1 500 in cash and a cellphone valued at R3 000. The injured shopkeeper was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

• Cables and tools were stolen during a break-in at a workshop at a construction site along 15th Road in Sallies Village.

• A man was robbed while walking along Station Road at 21:00. The victim was attacked by three men, one of whom was armed with a gun. They searched the victim and fled with his cellphone.

• A white Uno Mia was stolen from an address along Voortrekker Road.

Saturday – A business in Vulcania was robbed of non-ferrous steel, car batteries and copper. People living on the premises along Atomic Street were rounded up by two or more intruders at around 00:30.

The robbers, at least one of whom was armed with a gun, also stole cash, cellphones and a white Mazda bakkie.

• A food delivery driver was robbed of cash by the occupants of two Volkswagen Polos. The incident took place at about 19:00 as the victim was travelling along Denne Road en route to make a delivery in Minnebron.

A silver Polo sped past him and braked in front of him forcing him to stop. A blue Polo then pulled up behind him.
The victim found himself surrounded by three men who threatened him with a firearm.

One of the men smashed his vehicle’s window and the trio got into the car. They instructed him to drive to a secluded area in Sunair Park where they then searched him.

He was robbed of R12 000 in cash and was forced to request money to be transferred to him from friends or relatives. An amount of R5 000 was transferred and then also stolen.

• Laptops, TVs, jewellery, cash and other household items were burgled from a home along Willem van Zyl Street in Minnebron.

• A white Toyota Hilux bakkie was stolen from the corner of Abercorn and Elliot streets.

Sunday – Customers and staff at an eatery along Wenden Avenue were robbed by two men. The pair, both of whom were armed with guns, entered the premises at around 19:45. They fled with cash from the till and a cellphone.

• Tools and expensive liquor were stolen during a burglary at a business along Graaf Street in Sonneveld.

• A white Toyota Land Cruiser was stolen from Beechwood Street in Dalpark.
